Spotted Porcupinefish – The Watchful Eye

The eye of the Spotted Porcupinefish (Diodon hystrix) is a fascinating feature that reflects the fish’s nocturnal lifestyle. Large and highly mobile, it allows the fish to scan its surroundings with minimal body movement—an advantage for detecting both predators and prey. The eye often appears dark and glossy, sometimes with subtle reflective tones that help it capture available light in dim reef environments. This enhanced vision is especially useful at night, when the porcupinefish leaves its daytime shelter to forage for hard-shelled prey such as crabs, mollusks, and sea urchins.
