Urocaridella antonbruunii

Scientific Name: Urocaridella antonbruunii
Common Name: Clear Cleaner Shrimp

Size: Up to 3 cm
Depth Range: 5 – 40 m
Habitat: Found on coral reefs, rocky slopes, and overhangs; often lives in pairs or small groups inside crevices or beneath ledges where it establishes cleaning stations for reef fish
Diet: Feeds mainly on parasites, dead skin, mucus, and organic debris removed from client fish, as well as small suspended particles
Reproduction: Separate sexes; females carry clusters of fertilized eggs beneath their abdomen until they hatch into free-swimming planktonic larvae
Fun Fact: Despite its almost transparent body, the clear cleaner shrimp is highly visible to fish thanks to its bright white markings and constantly waving antennae, which signal its cleaning services across the reef.

Observation Tip: Look carefully under ledges, inside small caves, or around coral crevices where reef fish gather and hover unusually still. The shrimp often remains upside down with long white antennae extended, ready to clean approaching fish. A torch can help reveal its transparent body against the reef background.
