Paradoris sp4 5

Scientific Name: Paradoris sp. 4

Adult Size: 10 – 15 mm
Depth Range: 8 – 30 m; often found on coral rubble and rocky outcrops
Biotope / Habitat: Lives on encrusting sponges and algae-covered reef surfaces, where it grazes and camouflages with the substrate
Diet: Sponge feeder; scrapes sponge tissue with its radula and assimilates defensive compounds from its prey for protection
Reproduction: Simultaneous hermaphrodite; mates flank-to-flank and lays a flat, spiraled ribbon of eggs on hard substrates near food sources. Larvae are planktotrophic before settlement.
Fun Fact: Members of the genus Paradoris are masters of disguise—their tough, leathery mantles and mottled patterns make them almost indistinguishable from the reef surface. Spotting Paradoris sp. 4 requires a sharp eye and a slow dive pace.

Rugged and well-camouflaged, Paradoris sp. 4 may not dazzle with its very small size, but it is an excellent example of stealth and survival on the reef. For divers who enjoy the challenge of finding hidden treasures, this nudibranch is a rewarding discovery.
