Chelidonura amoena 2

Scientific Name: Chelidonura amoena
Common Name: Elegant Chelidonura

Adult Size: 10 – 35 mm
Depth Range: 1 – 20 m; most common on sandy bottoms and algae-coated rubble in lagoons and reef flats
Biotope / Habitat: Open sand patches near seagrass or coral heads where minute flatworms—its prey—are abundant
Diet: Active predator of tiny acoel flatworms; uses chemosensory “tails” to track prey across the sand
Reproduction: Simultaneous hermaphrodite; individuals form short mating chains, then lay a slender, jelly-like string of eggs under rubble or in sand depressions. Larvae are planktonic before settling.
Fun Fact: Chelidonura amoena sports twin posterior “tails”; the longer right tail acts like an antenna, sweeping the sand as the slug cruises in serpentine fashion.

This headshield slug glides over sand like a miniature spaceship. Look for winding tracks at dusk; if you follow them closely, you may spot C. amoena hunting with graceful, looping turns.
